The EDA’s latest analysis, ENHANCING EU MILITARY CAPABILITIES BEYOND 2040, was published on 23 October 2023, and focuses on developments over the next 20 years.
Technological developments which will have an enormous impact on future warfare and defence strategies. Understanding those changes and their impact would provide an advantage and help ensure that policies and investment are, as much as possible, future-proof.
One main aim of the work of the EDA is to support the development of defence capabilities and military cooperation among the European Union Member States.
“By working together to develop stronger and more credible military capabilities, the EU can be proactive in safeguarding its security, asserting its autonomy, and ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens”, says Jiří Šedivý, EDA Chief Executive in the foreword of the publication.
The EDA concluded, that the future battlefield will be shaped by the interaction of technology with diverse political, social, economic, environmental and technological strategic trends.
Alongside possible future threats, the analysis outlines ideas for workable long term solutions, and details the implications of six technologies:
The results of the analysis will form part of the EU’s Capability Development Priorities, and will be presented to EU Ministers of Defence (for purpose of clarity only – at what meeting/forum? ) on 14 November 2023.
